COLOR HACKABLE HARINEZUMI v1.00
click here http://www.circlerectangle.com/blog/archives/789
Basically the Harinezumi went through a lot of changes through out the entire time. And in this post today, I will be explaining them in details. The Harinezumi started out with the firmware Version 1.11.
In the firmware V1.11 Harinezumi, by holding the “ok” and the shutter button, turn the unit on, wait until the unit starts up and a debug menu can be accessed. In this debug menu you can change the color tones by changing the R/G/B settings and a LIVE VIEW display.

by tuning the RGB color settings you can get a very cross-processed feeling in your photos
Then came a version, that not everyone is familiar with. The CHINON version that runs on Firmware v1.00. The CHINON version is just a little different from the v1.11 version. It has a better menu interface and a little difference in texture.
Here is the video of the camera at work.

Generally its the same thing, but has a dull surface instead of a shiny one. As you can see the front has the word CHINON written on it.
Then the Digital Buchineko (harinezumi in white) came and its limited editions
the following are some shots of my ex-collection (sold)
The Digital Buchineko and some new Harinezumi 1 runs on the firmware v1.15. Firmware v1.15 does not enable users to use the Color Hack, even though the Debug mode can be accessed. The colors will not change no matter how the numbers have changed, it can only become a live view display hack.
HARINEZUMI 2 YOU.
2 new attractive functions had been put in to this new little camera.
1 not so attractive.
1. Black and white mode.
2. Super Close up mode.
3. Sound Input.
The camera’s megapixel went up as well. but generally the quality for the photos in colors are bad, so bad they don’t look like 8mm films.
they look like cheap security cameras. The only good that can come from the camera is its black and white mode. Since its a little noisy in color, the noise in black and white looks perfectly cool. Black and white videos are even cooler, check out the video below.
There is 1 thing I’ve been wondering, why not make the Digital Harinezumi 2 a Black and white digital camera?
wouldn’t that be cool? Superheadz, what are you guys thinking?
the color on the Harinezumi 2 suck so bad I wish it wasn’t in the function.

FINAL CONCLUSION
So my final conclusion is, if you like to shoot in Monochrome and closeup mode, harinezumi 2 would be a wonderful camera for you, it is small, you can buy a strap and hang it around your neck and look cool when you walk around with it.
If you like the old 8mm colored film videos and soft, but satuated colored photos, the normal harinezumi would be a better choice. Also if you have Adobe Premiere Pro (thats the only video editing program I know, please forgive me for being so ignorant hahaha.) The Monochrome video and higher light curves on Digital Harinezumi 2 won’t make any difference to you.
Since harinezumi 2 came out, the price for harinezumi 1 eventually drops, since the harinezumi 2 cost the same as the harinezumi 1.
if this going to be your first time to get the Harinezumi, I would rather you get harinezumi 1. If you are lucky, you might even get the V1.11 version that changes colors
Hope my little conclusion can help you get whats best for you.

please leave a comment below if you have any questions that I didn’t state here.

Well I bought the Buchineko and gave in to lust last night when I tried the Harinezumi 2’s macro mode. Argh!
Looks nice. I’d like one, but can’t justify the money (and postage to australia!), and wouldn’t want to risk not getting the firmware 1.11 version…
and just so you know, some common video editing software includes: iMovie, Final Cut Pro, etc. Those are both Mac software, of course, but useful for any mac users…
[tears] i feel like the 1.15 is the worst one. i really wanted to xprocess using the rgbs…
can i find it anywhere??
Thankyou Darcy
I am going to buy a v1.00 to test out if the color changing works, if it does. I can get some stock from them and sell it here.
Omario,
i’m not sure if the v1.00 works but I would give it a try, when i get my hands on one. then i’ll test it to see if the color hack works. if it does, i’ll sell them here.
After reading the reviews of the 2 over the last few weeks and checking out the youtubes videos, I got the 1 — and I’m loving it!
Cheers,
– J
Good job J, I love 1 better Too
I found your blog and I must say that I am a fan.
However I’m not very happy because I found your blog a few hours after I have already purchased online the harinezumi 2. If I had seen your videos of comparison I would definitely buy the first version.
I’m looking for an online store with harinezumi 1 but can not find any. Do you know any place that sells to Europe? Thanks
Catarina Vaz, Actually im trying to get the 1.11 for everyone, but still can’t find it. so i was thinking if 1.00 will have color change. i need to get my hands on 1 before i can tell the world about it.
I’ll wait for the good news.
Thanks
Hi Mijonju,
I bought a Harinezumi 1 after reading your blog (yes, I got poisoned!!). It’s expensive but Im glad that I got the hack’able version. woohoo!
Hi Norza,
Where did you buy the Harinezumi 1 with the v1.11 firmware?
norza! cool! where did you get yours? was it 1.14 or 1.11? both are hackable. only 1.15 sucks.
zhubin
I wanna know too
Mijonju, once you hack version v1.11…can you use the changed rgb setting ONLY in photo’s…or can those changed settings also be used to shoot video? Also, is there anything you like about the color of the new Digital Harinezumi 2?
zhubin, no you cannot do the hack on video.
and I dont like anything about the new harinezumi’s color. only the black and white mode.
Mijonju! thanks for the blog.
Not sure about the color discussion. Check this video -http://vimeo.com/7956297. Doesn’t the colors look great? It says it is Digihari2.
Keep it up.

Robert P.
yes i dont hate it, I just prefer 1 better. 2 is wonderful too, some like chocolate some like strawberries, the video on hari 2 is too saturated for me. (but surely it will gain new fans)
Mijonju & zhubin…I got it from my local forum (buy&sell section) at http://forums.clubsnap.org.
prev owner didnt even know anything about its hacking feature. too bad the vid cant be hacked but well…its better than nothing.
btw…its the 1.14 version.
that is great! lucky you!
Getting mine tomorrow! All the reviews online (including this article) have made me a believer!
For those wondering where they could get the 1.11 version, found some on ebay. Just google “harinezumi” – there are quite a few sellers.
I found a local distributor that’s slightly cheaper, but the prices aren’t too bad at all online.
Hey Katherine, were you able to find v. 1 at your local distributor? If so, could you tell me where? Thanks.
Hi Mijonju, I’m currently looking on ebay to see if I can find the original harinezumi, is there any way for the seller to check whether the version they are selling is the 1.11 firmware version without them opening the product??
Thanks
So I got a Harenezumi 2 a couple of weeks ago and was really starting to like it. Then I had a party this week, got a little drunk, and the little guy ended up falling out of my pocket and into the toilet!!! I don’t know what to do.
oh Andrew! that’s bad, dry it up, put it in a bowl of rice, im not kidding, rice sucks the humidity out, take the battery out.. leave it in the rice for 2-3 weeks. hope it works.
Katherine, Ryan and cherrybombink
Im still trying to get my hands on the v1.00 and see if the color hack works. they still my has not arrived yet.
Hi Mijonju, I’m thinking to get harinezumi ..Can i ask u few questions? So, for the R/G/B setting, it’s only in hari 1? Do you know where I can get it in japan/? Also, is there b&w in hari 1?
Thanks!
@vernie
no problem,thats what im here for,
1st question: you can only Change color settings if you get the version 1.11 or 1.14
V1.15 has no color hack
2nd question: You cannot turn Harinezumi videos nor photos monochrome.
you can get harinezumi, in almost many kinds of stores, Tokyu Hands, Tower Record, Isetan, and some other stationary shops mostly in Big department stores or book stores.
Hi Mijonju, I’m totally new to the world of video and recently discovered the Harinezumi and now I really want one. My only concern is how do I go about importing it’s videos onto my MacBook? Is it easy to convert avi files to quicktime files? Is it a time consuming process? Can I use iMovie to edit what I record with the Harinezumi? Thanks!
@Sharuma
Hi! we share a common thing, I’m a mac user myself, and I have to give you the heads up, it is quite troublesome, first you have to covert the avi to Mov so that imovie can read them easily. Basically you have to do some extra work, but im sure youll get used to it and not feel the stress after some time.
you will also need a Micro SD card reader to transfer files to you computer.
generally its quite time consuming.
Mijonju, thanks for replying so quickly! What software do you recommend for the conversion of .avi files into .mov files?
i use skysoft video converter, you can look for the torrent.
hi mijonju! thanks for all the info!
do you live in japan? i’m going to tokyo the end of this month and wondering if harinezumi 1 will still be available since harinezumi 2 is out. i want harinezumi 1! >_<
hi minjoju seller in ebay still have harinezumi 1.
the question if harinezumi 1 still firmware 1.11 or 1.14?
@nut1000
Yes the Harinezumi 1 is AVAILABLE
please look for them in the following stores
-Most Major Tokyu Hands
-Shibuya Parco Basement 1
-Shibuya Tower Record 7th Floor
-Camera Cabaret Grand Shop
@tonny Darmawan
Im sorry, but I cannot assure you about the harinezumis on Ebay, I do not know the sellers too. Bid at risk! ^^
Hey all, what is the maximum size micro sd card you can use in the harinezumi?
Thanks in advance ^_^!
@Cherrybombink
Harinezumi1 goes up all the way to 4gb
Harinezumi2 goes up all the way to 16gb
thanks so much mijonju. i’m now following you on twitter!
hi, have you found out if v1.00 is hackable? i got the buchineko, and i really want to get a v1.11 or v1.14! it’s so hard to get one now! ):
Hey, a silly question but how can I check the firmware of my Harinezumi?
Thanks.
Hey Mijonju, are there any differences between 1.1 and 1.4 because i really want one that i can hack, and also i could be wrong but didn’t ndroo have some posts on his blog about black & white hacking on the harinezumi 1?
Thanks
The Harinezumi 1 is sold out in europe, I bought my Harinezumi 2 from these guys in Berlin http://digitalharinezumi.aarecords.net
I am getting my Harinezumi 1 soon with firmware v1.00 (according to the seller). I will let you know whether it is “hackable”.
@yun753 Im gonna get the 1.00 these days and make a video.
@Joe
1.11 and 1.14 is hackable
@anna Aw man, but i think hari2 is not that bad, just not my cup of tea.
@J.K.
Yeah! im doing it too, we can do it together.
Hey Mijonju,
You’ve convinced me that I need to get the hackable version of the DigiHari 1. Question: is there a way to tell what firmware is in the box without opening it up and checking it? I searched on http://esearch.rakuten.co.jp/rms/sd/esearch/vc?sv=2&sitem=harinezumi but I can’t be sure if I’m going to get a 1.15 or 1.00!
http://www.circlerectangle.com/blog/archives/789
UPDATE!!! HARINEZUMI 1.00 IS HACKABLE!!!!!
and it’s sold now already! )))): i NEED one!
it will be in stock soon!
YEAH!!! V1.00 is HACKABLE…hehe
Thanks to the information here and over on flickr, about a week and a half ago, I managed to snag a V1.14 hackable Harinezumi 1! It’s so great but boy does the battery run out quick (without a proper warning)!
So thank you to Mijonju and everyone else for their great product knowledge. I am now a proud owner of the Harinezumi!!
One question anywhere I can get a rechargeable CR2 battery in the UK without spending copious amounts of money? Just bought two duracell CR2 from Boots for a whopping £12.99, wasn’t very happy…
